Choose a website agency by checking three things: relevant work you can see, a written quote that spells out scope, ownership and ongoing costs, and a clear answer on who will own your domain, website and content.
As a guide, one independent Australian cost guide puts a typical small business website at $2,000 to $6,000, with custom builds at $6,000 to $15,000 and larger integrated sites higher (What’s The Damage?, verified October 2026). Your real price depends on scope, content and integrations, so compare quotes line by line, not just on the total.
This guide covers how to compare agencies, what drives cost, what a quote should include, and the domain and email questions that trip up most small businesses.
How do I choose a web design agency?
Look for evidence, not promises. Before you sign, check each of these.
Agency checklist
- Relevant work. Live sites they’ve built for businesses like yours, ideally ones you can click through on your phone.
- Who does the work. Whether the people you meet are the people who design and build your site.
- Platform fit. Whether they recommend a platform, such as WordPress or Shopify, based on your needs, and can explain why.
- A written, itemised quote. Pages, features, content, revisions, timeline and what’s excluded.
- Ownership in writing. You should own your website, domain and content. The Small Business Development Corporation in WA warns against contracts where the developer keeps ownership, because that can lock you in (SBDC WA).
- Ongoing costs stated upfront. Hosting, maintenance, licences and support, priced clearly.
- Payment against milestones. A deposit and progress payments, not 100% upfront (SBDC WA, as above).
- How it ends. How logins, files and passwords are handed over if you part ways.
Extra questions for clinics and practices
If you run a clinic or practice, also ask
- How do booking and enquiry forms work, and where is form data stored?
- Can your team update practitioner profiles, opening hours and treatment pages without paying for every change?
- Who tests the forms after updates, so enquiries don’t quietly stop arriving?

What drives the price
- Number and type of pages. A five page brochure site and a site with 40 treatment or product pages are different projects.
- Custom design or a template. Custom design costs more than adapting a theme, but fits your brand better.
- Content. Whether you supply the copy and photos, or the agency writes and sources them.
- Features and integrations. Booking systems, CRMs, memberships, payment gateways and forms.
- Rebuild work. Moving content from an old site and redirecting old URLs so you don’t lose search traffic.
- Revisions and timeline. How many rounds of changes are included, and how fast you need it.
Ongoing costs to budget for
Typical ongoing costs
- Hosting: $15 to $150 a month
- A .com.au domain: $15 to $30 a year
- Care plans: $50 to $300 a month
Figures from What’s The Damage? Ask every agency to list these separately, so you can compare the true yearly cost, not just the build price.
What is a fair price for a 5 page website?
A five page website for a small business generally sits in the guide’s “small business site” band of $2,000 to $6,000 (What’s The Damage?). It lands lower if you supply the content and use an established theme, and higher with custom design, professional copywriting or booking integrations. A fair quote is one where you can see what each part costs and what’s excluded.
What should a website quote include?
A good quote reads like a mini scope document. Check it covers:
Quote checklist
- The pages and templates being designed and built
- Features and integrations (forms, booking, shop, CRM)
- Who supplies copy, images and logos
- Number of design concepts and revision rounds
- Platform, theme and any paid plugins or licences, and who holds them
- Content migration and redirects (for rebuilds)
- Timeline and payment milestones
- What’s excluded
- Ongoing costs after launch
- Ownership of the domain, website files and content
Can an agency re-quote if the scope changes?
Yes. That’s normal when the scope genuinely changes, for example when you add pages, a booking system or a new feature mid-project. What matters is that your agreement defines the scope, what counts as a change, and how changes are priced before the work is done.
SBDC WA also recommends agreeing on how many revisions are included, and notes that fixing bugs such as broken links shouldn’t be charged as extras (SBDC WA). If you’re unsure about your contract terms, get independent advice.
Is it worth hiring a branding agency?
It’s worth it when your brand no longer matches the business you’ve become, when you’re launching something new, or when your materials look inconsistent across your website, signage and social media. A website built on a clear brand (logo, colours, type and tone) usually takes fewer rounds of changes, because the design decisions have already been made. If your brand is already solid, you may only need a website.
Branding agency vs marketing agency: what’s the difference?
| Branding agency | Marketing agency | |
|---|---|---|
| Main job | Defines how your business looks and sounds | Gets your business in front of customers |
| Typical work | Logo, visual identity, brand guidelines, messaging | Ads, social media, email campaigns, SEO, content |
| When you need it | Launching, rebranding, or fixing inconsistency | Growing enquiries or sales from an established brand |
| Output | A brand system you use everywhere | Ongoing campaigns and reporting |
Some agencies do both. If one agency handles both for you, ask how the brand work carries through into the campaigns.
Can another agency finish a site someone else started?
Usually, yes. Most agencies will want to assess the site first. Whether it’s worth finishing depends on:
- Access. Admin logins, hosting, domain and any design files.
- Platform and licences. Whether premium themes or plugins are licensed to you or to the previous developer.
- Build quality. Sometimes fixing a half-built site costs more than rebuilding it properly.
- Ownership. Whether your contract with the first developer gives you the files and content.
We take over and finish sites started by other agencies. We start with a site review before quoting.
Who manages the domain, DNS and email, and can I transfer them?
Your domain, DNS, website hosting and email are four separate things, and they can sit with different providers.
| Piece | What it does | Who should control it |
|---|---|---|
| Domain (e.g. yourbusiness.com.au) | Your address on the internet | Registered in your business’s name |
| DNS | Points the domain to your website and email | You, or a provider acting for you, with access you can recover |
| Website hosting | Where the website files live | Your agency or host, with your access documented |
| Email (e.g. Google Workspace, Microsoft 365) | Your business inboxes | Your business account |
Can I transfer my domain?
Yes. For .au domains, the registrant (the business that holds the licence) starts the transfer with the new registrar using a transfer authorisation code, sometimes called the domain password. auDA says there’s no fee to transfer a .au domain between registrars, and a transfer can take up to three days once approved (auDA).
Don’t lose your email
Before you change website agency or host, check that your email records stay pointed at your email provider. Moving a website shouldn’t take your email down with it.
How much should SEO cost for a small business?
The same independent guide puts most Australian small business SEO at $1,500 to $3,000 a month, local starter campaigns at $750 to $1,500 a month, and a one-off SEO audit for a typical small business site at $2,000 to $4,000 (What’s The Damage? SEO cost guide, verified October 2026).
What you get matters more than the price. Google’s own guidance on hiring an SEO says to ask for examples of past work, how results will be measured and over what timeframe, and whether every change will be documented. It also warns that “No one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google” (Google Search Central).
Red flags when choosing an agency
- Guaranteed rankings or guaranteed results
- Your domain registered in the agency’s name, not yours
- No written scope, or “unlimited revisions” with no definition
- Full payment upfront
- Ongoing costs that only appear after launch
- No clear answer on how you’d leave
How we work at Novu
We design and build websites on WordPress and Shopify, for projects of any size. Every project starts with a strategy session and design concepts. Once you sign off, we build your site on a development site so you can test it, make the revisions you need, then push it live.
At launch we test your forms, set up Google Analytics and submit your site to Google Search Console. WordPress sites are built in Elementor unless you ask for something different, so you can edit your own content afterwards, and we’ll show you how. Most projects take 4 to 12 weeks, depending on size, and one month of post-launch support and updates is included.
